About The Artist

I am a New Zealand artist based in the Manawatū, working primarily in oils.

My paintings are inspired by roses, vintage style, Parisian charm, and old-world European elegance, with a love of colour, contrast, and atmospheric light.

I create expressive floral and figurative paintings designed to bring warmth, character, and a sense of story to the home.

“I hope my paintings bring a sense of warmth, beauty and hope, inviting people to slow down, dream a little and imagine the stories they hold.”

- Marie Baxter

Marie Baxter grew up in New Zealand’s beautiful Bay of Plenty, where a love of creativity began at an early age. As a child, she would often wake before the rest of the family to spend the early morning making things, frequently transforming ordinary cereal boxes into imaginative creations. Her artistic talent was recognised early through success in local art competitions, and some of her childhood artwork was even published in the New Zealand Women’s Weekly.

Alongside a passion for art, Marie has always been drawn to writing and storytelling. From childhood, she loved creating stories as much as making art. That love of narrative continues to shape her work today, with many of her paintings inviting viewers to imagine the story unfolding beyond the canvas.

After returning to art later in life, Marie studied with the Milan Art Institute, where she developed her skills in contemporary oil painting and mixed media techniques. Today, she works primarily in oils, creating paintings inspired by old-world European charm, nostalgic beauty, and the warmth of places that feel lived in and loved.

“Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely… think about such things.”
